During active labor, the contractions become more intense and frequent, and the cervix starts to dilate more rapidly. Transition is the final phase of labor, characterized by the most intense contractions and full dilation of the cervix just before the baby is born.   The pain experienced during labor is often described as cramping, tightening, or pressure in the lower abdomen and back.
